Virginia Faulkner was born in Lincoln, Nebraska, on 1 March 1913. After graduating with honors from Lincoln High School in 1928, she attended the University of Nebraska from 1928-1930. She went to Rome to study at Miss Moxley's School from 1930-1931 and then attended Radcliffe from 1932-1933. She did not obtain a degree from these two institutions.
